John Cornish is a practicing and exhibiting artist and highly regarded art tutor. John holds an Advanced Diploma in Art and Creativity and has been tutoring students for the past 15 years, both at NZQA approved tertiary provider The Learning Connexion, and privately. His teaching has been at levels 4 to 7 ( the level he currently teaches at) Johns work can be found on FB John Cornish Artist

John says of his classes:

"The approach to the classes I'm offering is simple. I believe it is a given that all artists must know their materials, whatever it is you choose to work with. I liken it to building a relationship and it is no different than getting to know different people; some connections are stronger and deeper than others. I encourage curiosity and exploration, plenty of testing and playing (practical research!), to ensure you are working together ( with your materials) in the best possible way. This approach is at the heart of my own practice. I've observed over time  how, by exploring process and materials, it can very quickly become what we call technique!

I'm not big on focusing on finding a 'style',(that will come naturally),or trying to fit certain boxes, I work with students to help connect you with whatever is relevant and important to you. The classes may begin with a group exercise, to warm up and help with generating ideas.  You may choose to extend and develop these in class or I will help you with something you particularly wish to achieve. There is plenty of one to one as I prefer to have smaller numbers in class.

Interactive learning and sharing is encouraged and I guarantee a safe and supportive environment for you to create in, after all to create from one's own self is potentially one of the hardest and bravest things to do, but ultimately too one of the most rewarding, on so many levels"

Since finishing her studies in 2016 Birgit is fully immersed in developing her arts practice further by creating and exhibiting art work that often carries elements of belonging and connection to place.

Over the last three years she has incorporated teaching into her arts practise and is frequently running a range of workshops including weaving harakeke, mark making and natural dyeing.

‘Creating a relaxed atmosphere and a good sense of humour is important to me as much as patience and time for each student to guarantee the best learning outcome. For me it is the most rewarding moment when students achieve their goals; being overwhelmed and excited by their own creativity’.
